Plan your Layout to the T!

Even though it may be tempting to jump directly into selecting tiling or appliances, your kitchen's layout plan must undoubtedly come first. Knowing how you intend to use the space can help create the ideal kitchen plan. The dimensions of each component of your ideal kitchen can be established before deciding where they will be placed. Plan the landing spaces in your kitchen so that the cooktop and refrigerator have at least 15 inches of countertop space on each side. Even near other small appliances like a coffee maker or toaster, ample empty space is crucial!

Keep the corners clean.

When selecting where to place cabinets and appliances, pay close heed to the corners. Ensure that cabinet and appliance doors are completely functional and will not slam into one another when they are opened simultaneously.

Pro-tip: Low-profile handles could be a good choice if you need to maneuver around a tight corner!

You can never have enough power points.

Strategically placed electrical outlets make all the difference. Make sure your kitchen has lots of electrical outlets where you intend to utilize countertop equipment like a coffee maker, blender, etc. Install numerous outlets on the island so you can have power wherever you need it.

The floor is yours to take.

When planning the flooring for your kitchen, weigh the pros and cons of each material based on your requirement. For instance, you could conclude that wood might not be the greatest choice if you have young children or pets that are likely to scrape and spill on your floors. Also, opt for flooring that is not slippery because spillage is common in kitchens. You don't need to break a bone or two when making your favorite dish.

Similar principles apply to countertops. Presently, marble is undergoing a major design renaissance. And no surprises there, as its pros are numerous!

Keep the crowd away.

Another important factor to keep in mind while designing your kitchen is to ensure that you keep the main working area as clear from the main section of the home as possible. It is also important to ensure at least 5 feet of clearance if you have an island with seating involved.

After carefully planning your design, layout, and specifications, you can allocate some extra time in the end for any last-minute details or changes. When designing a kitchen, practicality takes precedence over aesthetics.

Being actively involved in designing your own kitchen allows you to design a flow that works for your working style, add your flair, and install cutting-edge appliances that make cooking and cleanup a breeze. So don’t hesitate to be vocal with your requirements to the kitchen designer or builder, after all, it's your kitchen, so you should love it!
